Long Beach, CA — On Sunday morning, May 3, 2026 at 9 a.m., approximately 20 ASEZ STAR members from Orange County, Cerritos, Temecula, and Torrance gathered at Golden Shore Biological Reserve in Long Beach for an Environmental Cleanup.
The primary purpose of the event was to improve the safety and cleanliness for our Southern California’s wildlife through the removal of harmful debris. The ASEZ STAR Volunteers demonstrated outstanding dedication in removing plastic waste and other debris that posed potential hazards to both passerby’s and the local marine ecosystem. Through their collective efforts, the volunteers helped preserve the natural environment while fostering a cleaner, safer, and more welcoming environment for the community to enjoy its view as well as for local wildlife habitat.
The biological reserve location was selected following guidance from Kristie Gutierrez, who is an Environmental Program Coordinator at the Los Cerritos Wetlands Stewards Organization. According to Kristie, since Golden Shore Biological Reserve is near the Los Angeles River, a massive amount of trash flows up and down the river creating a safety and environmental hazard for birds who come to seek refuge and food. By focusing efforts on this biological reserve, the ASEZ STAR volunteers not only addressed visible pollution but also helped handpick out all the trash that got stuck in the plants from the tides coming in and out.
The cleanup initiative directly benefited local recreational visitors by enhancing the overall condition and safety of the area, while also supporting the marine ecosystem by helping preserve a healthier habitat for local birds and aquatic life. As Kristie stated, “Globally, we are related to the whole entire world. Our oceans are all connected to each other. So when we keep our areas clean, we’re really contributing to the whole world by being a little bit better and cleaner.” Her statement highlights the importance of environmental stewardship and reinforces the collective responsibility to maintain a clean and safe ecosystem for the wildlife that depends on it for refuge and survival.
The Golden Shore Biological Reserve Cleanup exemplified the participating churches shared commitment to environmental protection, civic responsibility, and community service. Through their collaborative efforts, the ASEZ STAR Volunteers demonstrated the positive impact of working together to care for both the environment and the well-being of the community, reflecting values of compassion, unity, and social responsibility
