Goal of Faith & the Passover

Every human activity has its own purpose. What is the purpose of going to church, then? What is the goal of our faith?

. . . you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.1 Pe 1:9

The Bible says that the goal of our faith is the salvation of our souls. Our souls will be in danger of dying in hell as the result of our sins if we fail to be saved (Ro 6:23; Rev 20:12–15).

The salvation of our souls means being freed from eternal death and torment in hell and receiving eternal life. We were doomed to be tormented in eternal hell, but God promised us eternal life.

And this is what he promised us—even eternal life.1 Jn 2:25

Therefore, we can say that the goal of our faith is eternal life. Then, what did Jesus, our Savior, tell us to do in order to have eternal life?

Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”Jn 6:53–54

We must eat Jesus’ flesh and drink His blood to have eternal life. Then, how are we able to eat Jesus’ flesh and drink His blood?

. . . Jesus took bread, gave thanks . . . “. . . this [the Passover bread] is my body. . . . This [The Passover wine] is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”Mt 26:26–28

Jesus referred to the Passover bread as His body and the Passover wine as His blood. Those who keep the Passover of the New Covenant have eternal life because they are the ones who eat Jesus’ flesh and drink His blood.

Therefore, let us keep the Passover just as Jesus and His disciples did, so that we can have eternal life—the goal of our faith—and enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
