King Asa and King Jehoshaphat faithfully kept God’s decrees and laws, demolished every idol, and governed their people and kingdoms with the unwavering conviction that all would go well as long as they had God. As a result, God granted their nation peace, and He bestowed upon them overflowing blessings and glory.
Through the history recorded in the Bible, God has shown mankind the path to receiving His blessings. We must not commit the sin of turning to powerful nations for help while failing to seek God, as Asa did in his later years. Nor should we align ourselves with those who practise evil or pursue any endeavour alongside them, as Jehoshaphat did. It is because when we forget God and place our trust in the people and circumstances around us, He withdraws His blessings from us.
They assembled at Jerusalem in the third month of the fifteenth year of Asa’s reign. At that time they sacrificed to the LORD seven hundred head of cattle and seven thousand sheep and goats from the plunder they had brought back. They entered into a covenant to seek the LORD, the God of their ancestors, with all their heart and soul. . . . All Judah rejoiced about the oath because they had sworn it wholeheartedly. They sought God eagerly, and he was found by them. So the LORD gave them rest on every side. 2 Chronicles 15:10–15
